Most people don't think about their off-grid system until they're already at camp with a flat battery or a blown inverter. You're ahead of the pack — and your rig is about to be properly engineered, not just guessed at.
Every system is different — your travel style, appliances, and rig all play a role. As a guide, smaller entry-level systems start from around $5,000. Mid-range builds typically sit between $10,000–$15,000. Larger full-featured systems range from $15,000–$25,000. Most customers wanting to run 240V appliances comfortably off-grid invest around the $15,000 mark. For a caravan with a 12V compressor fridge, 200Ah lithium is the minimum. Running an air conditioner for 4–6 hours per day on a week-long trip requires 400Ah minimum. Full-time travel with aircon needs 600Ah or more. The guide above calculates the right size based on your specific appliances and travel style.
A general rule: solar wattage should be roughly double your battery capacity in Ah. A 200Ah battery needs approximately 400W of solar for healthy daily recharge. A 400Ah battery needs 800W minimum. Camper trailers typically use portable solar blankets rather than fixed roof panels — the guide factors this in automatically.
A DC-DC charger charges your caravan or 4WD battery from your vehicle's alternator while you drive. It's essential for lithium battery systems — alternators can't charge lithium directly without one. The Redarc 40A Core BCDC is our standard recommendation for most builds. It also handles portable solar input, saving the cost of a separate solar regulator.
