There’s something special about pulling up in a remote campsite, brewing a fresh coffee, microwaving a hot meal, and jumping online to check the weather — all without a generator in sight.
But powering high-draw appliances off-grid takes more than a plug and play setup. You need a system built for performance, safety, and efficiency.
At Ozzy Auto Electrics, we design these systems daily. Here’s what it takes to confidently run a coffee machine, microwave, and Starlink internet — even in the middle of nowhere.
☕️ 1. High-Draw Appliances Need Serious Power
Let’s break down what we’re talking about here:
- Coffee Machines (Nespresso, Breville): 1200W–1800W
- Microwaves: 1000W–1500W continuous
- Starlink: ~50W continuous (with some startup spike)
- Induction cooktops (bonus): 1800W–2200W
- Power tool chargers: 300W–600W (depending on make)
These appliances require high-current draw for short bursts — and if your system isn’t up to it, you’ll trip the inverter, drain your batteries, or risk damaging components.
🔋 2. Battery Bank: 200Ah+ Lithium Is the Starting Point
Forget AGMs. They can’t handle high discharge rates and will suffer serious voltage drop when asked to power an inverter.
We recommend a minimum 200Ah lithium battery, wired for high-current output with proper fusing and busbars. Here’s why:
- More usable capacity (80–90% vs AGM’s 50%)
- Fast recovery via alternator or solar
- Lighter and smaller footprint
- Safe for deep cycling and high loads
We often build custom lithium boxes with Bluetooth-enabled BMS, mounted with ventilation and secured for corrugation.
⚡ 3. Inverter: 2000W or 3000W Pure Sine Wave
The inverter is the heart of your 240V off-grid system.
You’ll need at least a 2000W pure sine wave inverter to safely run coffee machines and microwaves. For more headroom or multiple loads (coffee + Starlink + lights), we step up to 3000W.
We use Victron or Enerdrive for reliability, safety, and support. All inverters are:
- Hardwired with RCD/MCB protection
- Switched with remote on/off panels
- Tested under full load before you leave the shop
And we pair them with AC transfer switches, so your system auto-switches between inverter and shore power without risk of backfeeding.
📶 4. Starlink: How to Power it Properly
Starlink is a game-changer for remote travellers. But out of the box, it’s built for 240V use. We convert it to run on clean, regulated 12V DC, which reduces power loss and keeps your system safer.
At Ozzy Auto, we:
- Install a dedicated fused 12V feed for Starlink
- Use DC converters that output clean, stable voltage
- Provide labelled switching to turn it on/off without pulling plugs
We can even integrate it into a touchscreen system (Victron Cerbo) with app control and diagnostics.
☀️ 5. Charging: Alternator + Solar Must Keep Up
A system that powers these appliances must recharge fast.
We build in:
- 40A or 50A DC-DC Chargers (Redarc or Victron)
- 400–600W of fixed roof solar
- 200W–300W of portable solar blanket input
The charger will pull from your alternator while you drive, and solar keeps you topped up while parked. We balance this system to ensure you’re never running behind your usage.
🔍 6. Monitoring: You Need to See What’s Happening
Powering high-draw gear means monitoring is non-negotiable.
We install:
- Victron SmartShunt (Bluetooth battery monitor)
- BMV-712 for visual dash display
- Or the Cerbo GX + Touchscreen for full power system control
You’ll see:
- Real-time power draw
- Solar input
- Battery SOC (state of charge)
- Inverter load
- System alerts
It puts you fully in control and takes the guesswork out of power management.
🛠 How Ozzy Auto Builds It Differently
We’ve seen the shortcuts: under-rated cable, no fusing, gear bolted to ply with no airflow, no testing.
Our builds are:
- Engineered for real-world usage
- Fitted with oversized cable and clean routing
- Designed with future expansion in mind
- Finished with a full handover and walkthrough
We don’t just install parts. We build systems designed for how you travel — whether you’re camped at the beach for a weekend or off-grid for weeks.
